Globalization: Ideological Construction or Evident Reality

Is globalization actually happening? Globalization: Ideological Construction or Evident Reality? No sooner has academician and local commentators seem to argue that globalization was changing everything in today’s world, that it became fashionable to proclaim the ‘end of globalization’ or the ’death of globalization’ post 9/11. However, this debate about globalization remains quite unfathomable and hence above questions unanswered. Globalization, as argued, is a slippery and dangerous yet most important buzzword of our times. It is slippery because it can have multiple meanings and can be used in multiple ways. It…

Negligence Thwarts Tree Planting Efforts in Malawi

While tree planting and forest conservation has been at the centre of the Forestry Department of Malawi since 1976, deforestation seem to have gained more ground within the same period. These noble efforts have been frustrated by the increased bare grounds in the country side, especially on the periphery of the growing towns and cities. Tree planting has been the main driver to rehabilitate the destroyed forest resource in the country. Tree planting and forest conservation efforts have been focused at the village level where communities are at the centre…

People Centered Forest Policy for Malawi

“My forest, my life” echoes as the theme for the National Forestry Season for 2013/14 in a Malawi, a country reputed to have the highest deforestation rate and land degradation on the African continent. Illegal charcoal production, wanton cutting down of trees and encroachment in protected forests have destroyed the picture of the once lush miombo forests of the country. Amid all the increased forest destruction that goes on, almost unabated, the government still recognizes the important contribution of forests to the national economy. According to the Economic Valuation of…

Will Gates Foundation Replace the UN?

“Don’t just go for safe projects, take on the really tough problems”, were the words of advice, Warren Buffet, co-trustee of the Gates Foundation, gave to Bill Gates about philanthropy. When the foundation was founded in 1994, known then as the William H. Gates Foundation, after Bill Gate’s father, there was little doubt that the charity was going to succeed, because after all, everything associated with Bill Gates - the richest man on the planet - succeeds. Some 16 years later the Gates Foundation has been cited as being the…

The UN and The Queen

Will the Queen’s visit to the UN influence the quest for world unity and peace? Or do actions speak louder than words? Whenever you make a trip to Buckingham Palace, regardless of the day, month or year, American accents are always the most prominent intonation to be heard outside the palace, as eager tourists from the States excitedly ogle the British Monarch’s abode. With such devoted enthusiasm, wonderment and intrigue many Americans hold of the British royal family, it was little wonder that New Yorkers were excitedly distracted by the…

Poverty in Morocco

As the unevenness in wealth grows in Morocco, the age of excess needs to be replaced by an age of equality. If I was given a Dirham every time a Moroccan person picked up my two young sons and kissed them lovingly on the cheek during our recent five-day visit to Marrakesh, I would probably have made enough money to buy myself a "meat tagine" at one of the more up-market restaurants in the city. Touching and kissing fair-haired children, I am told by particularly enthusiastic and friendly local, is…

Green Revolution and Hunger

The Failings of the Green revolution puts Hunger back on the Priority Agenda. It was born and developed to boost agricultural production and feed the world’s growing population. Four decades later as hunger, particularly in the Asia- Pacific region climbs, the Green Revolution is unable to meet new demands, unable to feed new mouths. Launched in the late 1960s, the Green Revolution was a series of initiatives aimed at increasing agricultural production and feeding the world’s population affected by hunger. The initiatives, which included making grants and loans available to…

UNICEF and MDG’s

Are UNICEF and the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) on target for providing a better future for children? Assuming the post of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) sixth Executive Director on 1 May 2010, Mr. Anthony Lake ‘reassuringly’ pledged on his first day in office to help the world’s children “inherit a better tomorrow”. Words however are always easier than actions, promises easier than proceedings, and one cannot help but wonder, somewhat dubiously, exactly how Mr. Lake and UNICEF intend to accomplish such an audacious but imperative pledge. Being an…
